About

Michael Woodruff is a multidisciplinary digital artist, working across film/tv, documentaries & advertising based in London, UK. He’s worked on a vast array of projects over 20 years from Hollywood blockbusters, Netflix no#1’s most watched, Giant billboard DOOH for the world’s leading brands to Holograms and animated short films for musicians and museums.

He is primarily interested in motion design, archives & animation and weaves this into nostalgic fuelled abstract imagery and video, looking at digital marks and processing with graphic design principles and how we connect and perceive these elements in the same way expressionists have over this past century.

As a contributing member of the Techspressionist movement, he likes to advocate for the responsible and creative use of technology and software processes in his art journey. With a deep love of electronic music, maps and all visual cultures, you’ll find him procrastinating and easily distracted at regular intervals.

SENSORY EUPHORIA FILLED FILMS

Fuelled by two decades of working within TV, film, animation & advertising Michael’s work functions as a collaborative experience between the viewer and the art itself. As spectators engage with the evolving scenes, their minds actively interpret and attempt to comprehend the visual stimuli presented to them. Woodruff skilfully reimagines the fundamental tenets of Abstract Expressionism, employing techniques such as mark making, colour theory, and the interplay of textures to craft a mesmerising visual ethereal language, whilst showcasing the often overlooked emotive language of animation.

In his animations and films, each frame exists in symbiosis with the next, forming a captivating dance of form and colour with compositions that hope to evoke an emotional depth. The rapid succession of images mirrors the associative confidence paths of AI-trained LLM, further blurring the lines between human creativity and technological innovation, pushing the software beyond it’s presets.

Through his innovative approach, Woodruff invites viewers to explore the intersection of art and technology through the screen, challenging conventional notions of expressionism and perceptions of the digital age and the present in-flux battleground of media culture.
